STARS classroom provides the appropriate place for visual supports, picture schedules, structure, routine, and a common transitioning classroom.
As we begin the 2012-2013 school year most of you know me and Kelly, but for those of you who are new to our class, we’d like to introduce ourselves and give you some information about the STARS class. I was born and raised in the DFW Metroplex, received my bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas in 2002. I’ve been married for 8 years and have a daughter, Bella, who will be five in September and a son, Becks, who will be 2 in December. I have worked in private and public education settings for eight years. I was a part of the opening team of Basswood Elementary and love being a Basswood Hawk! Kelly Baker has lived all over the world. She has been married for 17 years and has a son, Bo, who is a proud member of the Central Charger football team. She has worked in public education for eight years. This is her fourth year at Basswood Elementary working in the STARS classroom and she’s really looking forward to a successful and fun year with our students.
The STARS classroom is a resource-style classroom for your child. Students access the classroom according to a schedule as well as on an as needed basis. We also provide inclusion support, as needed, for academic support as well as behavior support. Anytime that your child needs additional support we are just a phone call away and are ready to help your child in whatever capacity is needed. We want to stress to the students that the STARS room is not a punishment or somewhere to avoid work, but it is a place where they can get help on their work, a quiet place to work independently and a place where they can take a few minutes away from a situation that is causing them distress. As we continue the year we will spend a lot of time discussing techniques for avoiding situations that may upset us, tools for calming down, frustration/anger management techniques, emotions, making and keeping friends, conversation “rules” and the hidden curriculum/social rules. We look forward to working with you to make this an intentionally exceptional year for your child! Thank you! Misty Phy and Kelly Baker Basswood Elementary STARS program 817.744.6500 |
